The dreaded COVID-19 pandemic caught us all by surprise and dramatically affected our lives, especially the elderly, who are the most vulnerable to the virus. We closed our restaurant-style dining room and stopped our popular exercise, spiritual and music programs, and other activities. We also stopped all visits, outside workers, and non-essential outings.
The toughest part was not letting children enter the building, which also meant that families and friends could not take their loved ones out for a ride, to eat, or to the movies. The loneliness that our residents felt sparked our creativity to fill the void. It was a strange time, but our resilient team rose to the challenge.
We set up video chats, small book clubs (with social distancing), patio chats (with social distancing), and encouraged more participation at our garden club. We also organized concerts where one of our members' grandsons played the tuba from the parking lot while we listened from the first, second, and third-floor porches. Hallway bingo, lounge gathering dinners (distanced, of course), and hallway trivia have become quick favorites! Thanks to Janet and Lisa, our dynamic activity team.
Residents also kept fit with social distancing exercises along the hallways, where routines were light, and there were plenty of laughs and positive vibes. The sunshine also helped to make people happy.
Most families asked if they could send and drop off packages, so we set up a table under our awning outside for correspondence to be left. We sanitized the parcels before delivering them, and the process worked out wonderfully.
Overall, we seemed to make the best of the situation, and it taught us to live life to the fullest. We also learned to value the people around us. As we continue to tackle the coronavirus, we are taking every precaution to ensure that our establishment can be a haven for the elderly.
