Moving to a senior living facility will be a significant shift or change in your life, and it will require you and your family to go through some challenges. The transition can bring a rollercoaster of emotion with sorting through closets, packing, and cleaning, which can be physically and mentally exhausting. Moreover, you will be leaving behind a lifetime of memories spent with your spouse, children, and grandchildren.

At Buckingham South, we understand that moving is stressful no matter what age you are and would like to help ease the transition process so that you feel comfortable with it. We have rounded up five helpful tips to help make your transition into assisted living as smooth as possible.

Tip #1: Find and check potential assisted living options
Different assisted livings offer different levels of care. Ask what the highest level of care is offered at the assisted living you have chosen and what reason would constitute someone’s need to move out.

Tip #2: Get physician’s report
Physician’s reports for pre-admission into assisted living are necessary BEFORE a client moves into an assisted living community. This includes going over your list of medicines that you actually take. Sometimes when doctors prescribed medications to most seniors who decide not to take them. But when you move into assisted living, know that the staff will request the list of your medicines, and they will include all your medications.

Tip #3: Take your time
Give it time. Just as all moves take time to acclimate, give your loved one time to adjust. Visiting in the beginning and going to the assisted living functions with your loved one is recommended. Chatting and talking with some of the other people is recommended. All changes are hard, especially when you think you’ve outgrown any new beginnings.

Tip #4: Understanding the benefits of palliative care in assisted livings
If you have many medical ‘conditions’ going on all at once and are bouncing from hospital, home, to another doctor’s appointment, ask the nurse at the assisted livings if palliative care is right for you and your family.

Tip #5: Take advantage of the space
Recreate a familiar environment by placing in belongings that you treasure the most. At Buckingham South, we have a thirteen-foot ceiling to fill up the wall. Moreover, we love when you hang portraits, pictures, anything from home that makes it look and feel like home.
